Kwara Governor Laments Loss of Army Major Slain by Bandits in Niger Ambush

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has expressed his condolences to the Nigerian Army and the community of Eruku in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State following the tragic passing of Major Segun Oni. Major Oni lost his life during an anti-banditry operation in Niger State on August 13, 2023.

The distinguished and dedicated army officer was leading a troop on a mission to eradicate banditry in various parts of Niger State when the unfortunate incident occurred. Major Oni held key positions within the military hierarchy, including roles as the Platoon Commander of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, Company Second in Command of the Armed Forces Special Forces Battalion, and Second in Command of the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces Battalion.

His extensive training encompassed multiple military institutions across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Belarus, and South Africa. He earned numerous military accolades in recognition of his exceptional performance, unwavering discipline, and relentless dedication. Among his honors were the River Niger Star, Golden Jubilee Medal, Centenary Medal, and General Operations Medal.

In a statement released by Rafiu Ajakaye, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, it was conveyed that Governor AbdulRazaq profoundly mourns the loss of this valiant officer. The governor’s heartfelt sympathies extend to Major Oni’s family, the Nigerian Army, and the entirety of the Nigerian Defence Headquarters. Major Oni’s demise is a profound loss not only for the nation as a whole but also for Kwara State specifically.

The statement further conveyed the governor’s prayers for the peaceful repose of Major Oni’s soul and for solace to envelop his grieving family and all who are affected by this sorrowful event.
