Atletico Madrid demonstrated their dominance by overwhelming local rivals Rayo Vallecano with a commanding 7-0 victory on Monday night, marking their most significant away triumph ever in La Liga.
The match saw Antoine Griezmann swiftly break the deadlock, followed by Memphis Depay, his strike partner, who netted the second goal from close range after a pinpoint delivery from Saul Niguez.
However, Atletico faced an unfortunate setback as Dutch forward Memphis Depay suffered an injury in the first half. Nevertheless, Nahuel Molina capitalized on a prime opportunity to slide in the third goal, effectively securing victory before halftime.
Substitute Alvaro Morata further extended Atletico’s lead in the 73rd minute and then struck again after Angel Correa’s goal, while Marcos Llorente concluded the impressive scoring spree with a late goal.
Speaking to Movistar, Antoine Griezmann expressed his satisfaction: “We initiated the game with high intensity, which set a positive tone. Securing these three points is crucial, and I’m incredibly pleased with the team’s collective effort today.”
This commanding win propelled Atletico to the second position in the league standings, trailing leaders Real Madrid by a mere two points.
Rayo Vallecano had enjoyed a strong start to the season, clinching victory in their first two matches. However, their aspirations were swiftly shattered by Diego Simeone’s formidable Atletico side.
Rayo midfielder Oscar Valentin acknowledged the defeat, stating, “They outperformed us comprehensively in every aspect of the game. While today’s outcome was disappointing, we must persevere and move past this setback.”
In an earlier match, Getafe secured their first triumph of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory against Alaves on home turf.
