Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic killing of Justice Margaret Igbetar, the former President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal. Her lifeless body was discovered in an unsettling state at her private residence on Wantor Kwange Street, opposite the College of Medicine at Benue State University in Makurdi.
In a statement released over the weekend by his media aide, Terver Akase, Chief Ortom conveyed his deep anguish at the barbaric and condemnable assassination. He emphasized that the individuals responsible for this heinous act have not only taken the life of a revered figure but have also extinguished the presence of a devoted mother who played a pivotal role in the state’s advancement.
Chief Ortom expressed his dismay at the tragic fate that befell Justice Igbetar, a woman who had dedicated her prime years to serving the state and subsequently retired to a private life, only to meet a cruel and untimely demise. He passionately hoped that the law enforcement agencies would swiftly apprehend the culprits and ensure justice is served. The former Governor also offered his prayers for the repose of the late jurist’s soul and extended his condolences to her bereaved family. He urged them to find solace in the knowledge that their mother had led a life marked by excellence in the service of both God and humanity.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command, as stated by its Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Catherine Anene, has reported the arrest of a suspect linked to the murder. The discovery of Justice Igbetar’s lifeless body at her residence prompted a thorough search, uncovering her body in a pool of blood within her own kitchen. Tragically, deep lacerations were evident on her back. The police’s diligent efforts led to the apprehension of a suspect named Aondohemba Joseph, along with the retrieval of crucial evidence for further investigation.
The Police Command’s resolve remains steadfast in bringing the perpetrators of this appalling crime to justice. Their commitment is resolute in ensuring that those responsible for orchestrating this act of violence will face the full consequences of their actions.
